A Window Into Eastern Mediterranean Productivity Conditions Over Three Pliocene Precession‐Forced Climate Cycles

چکیده

Abstract Here, we explore the importance of export productivity versus anoxia in formation sedimentary layers with enhanced total organic carbon (TOC) content. We use geochemical, sedimentological and micropaleontological records from two SW Sicily outcropping successions, Lido Rossello (LR) Punta di Maiata (PM), over three Early Pliocene precession‐forced climate cycles (4.7–4.6 million years ago [Ma]). Gray marls, deposited during precession minima, show TOC both records. suggest that basin‐wide, low‐oxygenated bottom‐waters, resulting freshwater‐induced stratification minimum, was integral to preserving gray marl TOC. Furthermore, prolonged eastern Mediterranean may have produced a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), leading “shade‐flora” dominated productivity. The LR succession displays unique laminated containing These laminations do not occur at specific times cycle or time‐equivalent PM samples. They are likely been by an intermittent dysoxic/anoxic pool LR, caused local depression, which preservation. Consequently, provide rare window into “true” conditions maxima, as matter is typically poorly preserved these period due ventilation. “windows” indicate significantly lower maxima compared previously thought. During periods, comparable modern Mediterranean, spring‐bloom winter/spring deep‐water mixing preceding summer bloom summer‐stratification induced DCM.

Incision into the eastern Andean Plateau during Pliocene cooling.

Canyon incision into mountain topography is commonly used as a proxy for surface uplift driven by tectonic or geodynamic processes, but climatic changes can also instigate incision. The ~1250-kilometer (km)-long eastern margin of the Andean Plateau hosts a series of 1.5- to 2.5-km-deep canyons that cross major deformation zones. Using (U-Th)/He thermochronology, we document a transition from Mi...

5. Magnetostratigraphy of Pliocene–pleistocene Sediments from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea1

Detailed paleomagnetic investigations were conducted to develop a magnetostratigraphic framework for sedimentary sequences that were recovered by hydraulic piston coring in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 160). A total of 1556 discrete samples from seven sites were subjected to detailed demagnetization, and high-resolution measurements of the magnetic properties of >10...
